DIRI and Zhejiang University Launch Collaborative Project on a Dictionary of Buddhist SogdianOn 26 September 2026, the Dhammachai International Research Institute (DIRI), New Zealand, and Zhejiang University, China, signed a research agreement supporting the compilation of a comprehensive dictionary of Buddhist Sogdian.The agreement was signed remotely by Phramaha Sutham Surattano, Dr., Chairman of DIRI and Assistant Abbot of Wat Phra Dhammakaya, and Professor Feng Guodong, Dean of the School of Literature at Zhejiang University.Sogdian is an ancient language of Central Asia that played an important role in communication along the Silk Road. Surviving Sogdian materials include a substantial body of Buddhist texts, particularly from sites such as Dunhuang and Turfan. Many are closely related to Chinese Buddhist texts, providing valuable evidence for the study of Buddhist translation and textual transmission across linguistic and cultural boundaries more than a millennium ago.The project is under the academic leadership of Professor Imre Galambos (高奕睿), Qiushi Chair Professor at Zhejiang University and Professor Emeritus at the University of Cambridge. The research team also includes two Fellows of the British Academy: Professor Nicholas Sims-Williams, FBA, Professor Emeritus at SOAS University of London, and Professor Yutaka Yoshida, FBA, of Kyoto University.The project will produce a Sogdian–Chinese–English dictionary of approximately 600 pages, systematically documenting Buddhist Sogdian vocabulary and its textual contexts.
