DIRI Journal

The DIRI Journal Volume 1 to 3 are academic journals that focus on the study of Early Buddhism and Buddhist meditation. The journals cover a broad range of topics related to Buddhism, including ethics, psychology, philosophy, and the relationship between the Buddhist tradition and contemporary issues. Each volume features articles written by international scholars and members of the Dhammachai International Research Institute (DIRI).

The JDIRI’s inaugural issue in Volume 1 provides a glimpse into the journal’s intended perspectives on Buddhism. It emphasizes the study of old manuscripts, particularly those related to the ancient meditation tradition, mūl kammaṭṭhān, of Theravāda Buddhist mainland Southeast Asia, and its connections to the modern vijjā dhammakāya popular in Thai Buddhism today.

Volume 2 covers a diverse range of topics, including the philosophy of consciousness, the role of meditation in cognitive development, and the relationship between Buddhism and contemporary issues such as social justice and environmentalism. The articles in this volume are written by both international scholars and members of DIRI.

Volume 3 of the JDIRI continues to offer new insights into the study of Early Buddhism and Buddhist meditation, including the importance of ethics in Buddhist practice and the relationship between Buddhist philosophy and contemporary issues such as mental health and addiction. Like the previous volumes, the articles in Volume 3 are written by international scholars and members of DIRI.

Overall, the DIRI Journal Volume 1 to 3 provide valuable contributions to the academic study of Buddhism, offering insights into the ancient tradition and its relevance to contemporary life.

DIRI Journal Volume 3

In the context of the DIRI Journal Volume 3, it is emphasized that uncovering neglected texts and utilizing them for exposing diverse strands within the Buddhist tradition through finely honed textual research is crucial for Buddhist scholars. However, due to socio-political changes and instability in historically Buddhist countries, retrieving old works has become increasingly challenging. Despite the available translations, scholarship has tended to prioritize larger fixtures and establishments over smaller “treasure houses.”
